A Large Funnel, Syphon and Sieve enable removal of solids and easy transfer during Racking.

Food Grade Plastic Bucket: Mash Fruit With Ease

At the very core of successful winemaking is a reliable food-grade plastic bucket. Serving as the primary vessel for Mashing fruit and Maceration, this versatile container provides the ideal environment for the extraction of juice and flavors from your fruit. Look for a spacious bucket with a tight-fitting lid to keep contaminants at bay. We’ve tested several brands and our current favorite is FastTrack Fermentation Bucket which is excellent quality and comes with a tight fitting lid.

Hydrometer: Gauge Of Perfection

A Hydrometer is a winemaker’s best friend when it comes to monitoring the progress of Fermentation. By measuring the Specific Gravity of your wine, you can determine its Alcohol content and track the Fermentation process with precision. There are many brands on the market, our favorite is the Brewer’s Elite Hydrometer. We recommend ordering it with a measuring cylinder.

Fermenter: Where The Magic Happens

A dedicated Fermenter is your next key investment. This vessel allows for the controlled Fermentation of your fruit juice, ensuring that the sugars are converted into alcohol. Choose a Fermenter with a secure lid, an airtight seal and an opening for an Airlock. These attributes are essential to maintain optimal conditions for your Yeast to work its magic. I use a commercially made plastic Fermenter, however many people like to use glass or plastic Carboys with a Rubber Bung. Both work well.

Our first option is the 1.5 Gallon Wide Mouth Fermenter and it’s a very good choice. Our gold standard choice is the Conical Fermenter designed to make sediment separation easy.

Airlock: Keeping Oxygen Out

An Airlock is a small yet indispensable device that attaches to your Fermenter, preventing unwanted oxygen from entering while allowing Carbon Dioxide to escape. This simple tool plays a crucial role in maintaining optimal conditions for your Yeast to work its magic.

Siphon: No Exposure To Oxygen

When the time comes to transfer your precious wine from one vessel to another, a Siphon is your trusty companion. This device allows for a smooth and controlled transfer of your wine. A Siphon enables you to leave Sediment behind and minimizes the risk of Oxidation preserving the delicate flavors you’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Large Funnel: No Spillage

A large Funnel is a practical addition to your toolkit, making the pouring and straining process a breeze. Choose one with a wide opening to accommodate the flow of liquid and make the transfer from one container to another a spill-free experience. I recommend having 2 sizes. One large enough to hold the Kitchen Sieve and another with a neck small enough to fit a wine bottle.

Kitchen Sieve: No Solids

To remove fruit pulp from your Must, a Kitchen Sieve is essential. The mesh helps filter out fruit pulp, fruit skins, seeds and other solids. The resulting product is a refined fruit juice that is ready for Fermentation.

Thermometer: Consistent Fermentation

Temperature control is crucial during Fermentation. A reliable Thermometer tells you whether your Must is fermenting within the optimal temperature range for the chosen Yeast. The correct temperature range enables your Yeast to work efficiently and produce the flavor profile you desire.

Measuring Cylinder: Easily Measure Samples

Taking measured samples throughout the winemaking process is essential. A Measuring Cylinder is a practical tool that helps you measure the size of a sample. It’s often used with your Hydrometer.
